The now legendary Hacienda La Esmeralda have already proven they know how to take Ethiopian coffees and plant them in any one of their three farms in Panama and take them to another level. The Gesha plant which has become the summit of excellence in coffee plant varietals was indigenous to Ethiopia, but found its most fertile growing soils and conditions on the slopes of Boquete and the farms owned and operated by The Peterson Family in Hacienda La Esmeralda.

With the success of the Gesha plant varietal it seemed only logical to take additional Ethiopian heirloom (landrace) varietals and plant them on their slopes. So in 2007 they began to do exactly that. The Landrace blend is a mix of coffees from this research project. 400 different accessions were planted at the El Velo farm. Since 2007, ecah year, every varietal is processed and evaluated individually. The results monitored and analyzed in order to find new exceptional coffee plant varietals. After the annual evaluation is complete the best performing accessions are mixed to create the landrace blend.

When we contacted the Peterson family late last year and enquired about getting hold of some of the Landrace accessions series we were basically told "get into the line, and this years upcoming crop is completley sold out". Then out of the blue we were contacted by the wonderful Brenda who told us a roaster had pulled out and we would like some. YES. YES WE WOULD!

No different to Heirloom varietals grown in their home land these Ethiopian coffees grown in Panama are everything you would expect. Floral and sweet, delicate and ethereal these are wonderful coffees. Jasmine in aroma, honey sweet and blossoms of citric fruits these coffees are B side players only. Milk will kill everything that make these tea like wonders so beautiful.

This maybe the only season we get our hands on these research project coffees, and we are thrilled to be able to offer them as part of our rare varietal series.

I heard wonders.......
